FAQs

1) You call this a fashion blog? Where are all the pretty photos?!?

I find it difficult to maintain a truly modest heart while constantly preparing photo shoots for the primary purpose of displaying my clothes. So this will not be one of those fashion blogs with daily outfit photos (I have nothing against such blogs, and think they serve a unique and important purpose!). I will likely post photos on a bi-weekly basis instead. To supplement my lack of OOTD’s, I will also post fashion tips and suggestions for dressing modestly yet stylishly here.

If you want daily outfit inspiration, check out my curated selection of modest outfits on my Tumblr.

2) Why did you start Downtown Demure

When I became a Christian, I made a commitment to change my lifestyle, including my attire. I was struggling to figure out how to dress modestly, so I did an extensive search on Google for modest fashion blogs. While I found several awesome blogs with pretty pictures and sufficient modest outfit inspiration, I grew tired of scrolling through endless stream of fashion photography. I wanted more — I wanted a modest fashion blog that pushed beyond the narrow focus of a typical fashion blog, and discussed the author’s beliefs and motivations behind the modest attire. Unable to find such blogs, I created my blog to do just that.

3) Why did you get baptized?

The short answer: I was convicted by God’s word to do what I knew was right. The long answer is in my testimony here.

4) What kind of Christian are you?

There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. (Ephesians 4:4-6 ESV)

I don’t believe in denominations or religious organizations beyond what is described in Scripture; thus, I simply refer to myself as a Christian, a lowly follower of Jesus Christ.

5) Where do you worship?

I think it’s very important to be careful about the churches I attend, and to test the message preached against the one only gospel (Galatians 1:6-9). Therefore I don’t attend churches affiliated with denominations or that profess to adhere to doctrines or creeds outside of the Bible. When I lived in New York, I attended Upper West Manhattan Church of Christ, and I would crash services and studies at West Harlem Bilingual Church of Christ. If you’re in the NY area and looking for scripturally sound churches for worship, I highly recommend those two. If you’re planning a trip to NYC, and want to get connected to members at either church, shoot me a message so I can help!
Now that I’m in LA, I’m looking for a new church home. 🙂

6) How do you make money as a blogger?

I currently make a (very) modest income through a PPC affiliate marketing program. When I include links to clothing items, I’m doing so through that program, and I get a whopping .05-.10 per click. To the lovely readers who click on those links: thank you for funding my lunch once a week! 🙂

Just discovered your blog today! It’s nice to see a modest fashion blog that focuses not so much on clothes but on the faith behind them. Hey, I don’t know whereabouts in LA you are, but you’re totally welcome at Relevant Church in Riverside! (Relevant316.com)

Wow! Its so inspiring to see you dressing modestly and not being afraid of spreading the wonderful testimony of Jesus as you do…I am also a Christian and I try my best to dress modestly.Even though it’s often hard to dress appropriately in this world, I understood that our bodies is the temple of Christ. We need to take care of it and represent the right testimony for others. Thanks for your blog…

Thank you so much for those kind words, Juliany! Amen, our bodies don’t belong to us — they are temples for the Holy Spirit that dwells within us. Only right that we should seek to honor God with our dress and ALL that we do with our bodies. It’s such a joy to meet another young woman who agrees!
