Happy New Year from me, D and all four of our wild, lovable fur babies!

This pic may be cute, but the second pic (swipe ➡️) captures some of the comical chaos behind the scenes. The cats kept attacking my plants and my pants. The dogs wouldn't sit still. My hair was on its own journey and couldn't be tamed. The only one who cooperated was D (thanks, babe). But...meh, we tried! 🤷🏿‍♀️ And I wouldn't change a thing.

This year, I am shrugging off perfectionism and embracing moments like this that are perfectly imperfect.

I'm grateful I can now spend nearly a week in a place like Vegas (over the holidays, no less!) and leave sober and sane. #itworksifyouworkit

After processing yet another chaotic week, I've decided to listen to my therapist - who recommends using gratitude to combat trauma - and finally share my EOY gratitude list for 2020:⠀
⠀
* Most of my loved ones are alive and Covid-free! 😷🙏🏿⠀
* My BFF and I finally got married!💍⠀
* Many close friends and family tuned into our little pandemic ceremony and continue to show love for our union 💜⠀
* I started working for an incredible DEI consultancy that is affecting real change and helping me become the practitioner I long to be 👩🏿‍💼⠀
* I took my first helicopter ride and was inspired to work towards my pilot license! 🚁⠀
* We went on a magical retreat in #Tulum c/o Hotel Bardo and lotsss of Mayan clay #travelisthenewclub 💆🏿‍♀️⠀
* My lovable but slightly neurotic puppies 🐾⠀
⠀
For accountability's sake, I also want to share my intentions for 2021:⠀
⠀
* Share my access to certain priveleges/resources to serve and empower those who do not have the same access. To that end, if you're job-hunting, LMK! 🫂⠀
* Set healthier boundaries between work and my personal life so I can protect my time for self-care and therapy 🧘🏿‍♀️🛀🏿⠀
* Be more transparent about my personal struggles rather than trying to appease everyone. One of my lifelong struggles is having social anxiety. I get anxious responding to ANY form of communication, even if it comes from my own mom. So if I ever leave you on read or take a while to call back...that's why 🙍🏿‍♀️⠀
*Give minimal f*cks about people who refuse to name/acknowledge the white Supremacy that governs America and continue to enable domestic terrorists like those who stormed the Capitol this week 🙅🏿‍♀️⠀
⠀
Wishing everyone a less chaotic/traumatic and more authentic new year! We aren't off to strong start, but I'm clinging onto hope and gratitude this year...

Today is the first time in four years that I haven’t been ashamed or embarrassed to share this this photo. Last night I slept better than I have in four years (almost 12 hours!!!). Yesterday — after years of corrosively divide rhetoric that appealed to autocratic white nationalism — I got to watch Madam VP-elect and POTUS-elect commit to upholding science and denouncing systemic racism (a term that many folks I work with refuse to acknowledge in their official company comms 😏). The work of turning this historic (and Black- and brown-driven) momentum into policy will continue, but today, I feel grateful to celebrate our collective joy!

Warning: Gushy post ahead! I’m not always an effusive person, but I’m still welling with emotion and gratitude over our little pandemic wedding (that was cancelled *twice* this year and literally no one thought would happen).

TBH, I did NOT want to have a traditional ceremony. I hate being lavished with attention, and I’m not one to uphold traditions I don’t believe in. But I’m so glad I was able to share a special milestone with so many people I love, despite the pandemic thwarting all of our original plans. It wasn’t perfect. I forgot my wedding ring and had to borrow my mother in law’s rock 🤦🏾‍♀️ We had to do our first kiss with masks on 😷 And our beloved siblings had to watch our ceremony from outside the venue while everyone else had to watch from a livestream 🤷🏾‍♀️ But everything turned out better than I could have dreamed!

To say I am *forever* grateful for the incredible humans who helped us pull off our little pandemic wedding is an understatement, but I have to give them a shout:

My amazing family: @sirkroy @pattiwunderlich @smurfetteanw and all the friends who watched our wedding
Ceremony venue: @albertsonweddingchapel
Hair: @jjules
Makeup: @ashleighhowardstylist
Florist: @goingsteadystudios

And lastly, thank you to my partner/BFF/ soulmate @derekwunderlich for putting up with me the past 4 years (and still deciding to put a 💍 on it).

More official pics coming soon!

And lastly, thank you to my partner/BFF/ soulmate @derekwunderlich for putting up with me the past 4 years (and still deciding to put a 💍 on it).

More official pics coming soon!

So inspired by @vsco’s #blackjoymatters challenge. We don’t just deserve to live, we deserve to thrive and be recognized for more than our trauma.

I have been meditating on joy a lot recently and have determined joy requires honesty.

And I honestly haven’t always felt pride in being black. In fact for most of my life, I hated being black and did all I could to conceal my cultural blackness that I couldn’t phenotypically hide.

I felt being black made people perceive me as uglier, dumber and less competent than my peers.

In the poignant words of Ibram Kendi: “Even now I wonder if it was my poor sense of self that first generated my poor sense of my people. Or my poor sense of my people that inflamed my poor sense of self. Like the famous question of the chicken and the egg, the answer is less important than the cycle it describes.”

Thanks to extensive education and God forcing me to reconcile with my internalized racism and self-hatred, I snapped out of that ignorant stupor.

Now I believe that any strength, beauty and courage I possess is derived from my Blackness. It is my super power that was neglected until it could be fulliy activated.

Got to spend the day celebrating this handsome man’s birthday!!! Happy birthday, my love! 🎉 🎂 It’s your special day, but I also feel like it’s mine because you’re the ultimate gift for me *cue cheesy 90s ballad* 😘

Real talk: I’m truly grateful to have this man in my life, especially now when I find myself drained after work from having 15+ conversations a day about the importance of inclusion and moving beyond simply not being racist. 😒 Thank you for constantly putting in the work and being my earthly rock in the toughest of times @derekwunderlich ❤️

Hm. Keeping it 2 virgils: I’m seeing a whole lot of black squares with no captions or commentary beyond BLM hashtags. I think a lot of folks missed the point of this #blackouttuesday campaign.

The point was NOT to mute/stop everything and completely disengage for the day.

We are fighting AGAINST the silencing and dehumanization of Black people for centuries. Going silent on social media does not support that fight.

The point of this campaign was to DISRUPT business as usual, so all of us —not just Black folx — can refocus our energies towards genuine reflection on what we can do collectively to support Black communities.

Posting a cute black square that will likely get deleted later is not activism or allyship if that’s all you do today. Please follow your posts with some real action.

Call/text your Black friend and colleagues to check on their wellbeing and ask how you can support them.

Donate to organizations committed to fighting for racial equity and protecting the rights and freedom of Black people. I recommend @colorofchange @campaignzero @blmla.

Promote and shop at black-owned stores. My faves are @blackvibetribe @dopeonarrivalnyc @adornedbychi.

Use your newfound free time to read up on Black history or listen to a podcast that focuses on Black experiences and centers Black voices. I recommend @nprcodeswitch + Pod Save the People + NYT’s Still Processing.

And please...if you’ve been silent about about police brutality against Black and Brown bodies + the recent murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery up until now, please don’t post a black square because it’s trending or you feel compelled to do so. We are not here for performative allyship rn.

Joshua Tree, but make it fashion. 🧡⁣
⁣
One of my intentions for 2020 is to get out and connect with nature more, so a peaceful trip to Joshua Tree felt appropriate. 🌵 What other national parks should hit this year?!

MOROCCO RECAP l Finally back from Morocco y’all and I’m ready to serve 🍵 the tea 🍵 on my trip.⁣
⁣
WHAT I LOVED ❤️⁣
⁣
Chefchaouen - That’s where I took this ☝🏾pic and the pics from my last post. This little town was SO dreamy and the highlight of my trip. Yes, it really is that blue and magical IRL.⁣
⁣
The people - What kind, good looking, multilingual group of people. We met SO many folks who went out their way to help us even though we speak minimal French and zero Arabic (pro tip: dust off your high school French skills before coming to Morocco if you don’t know Arabic). The only exception was in Marrakech’s medina. More on that below.⁣
⁣
The food - Never have I ever eaten so many delicious #vegan vegetable dishes! In fact, this is the first trip where I actually LOST weight because ate such healthy food. If you visit, be sure to eat as much veggie tagine and couscous you can stand. The riads - A riad is a traditional Moroccan house or palace with an interior garden or courtyard. Most of the riads in Marrakech are super affordable and SO gorgeous. Our riad was a beautifully designed oasis and respite from the craziness of the medina (swipe 👉🏾 too see pics).⁣
⁣
The shopping - Lemme tell you, I stocked UP on Argan oil, pottery, spices, purses as gifts for the family, and didn’t spend more than $200. 👏🏾⁣
⁣
WHAT I HATED 🙅🏾‍♀️⁣
⁣
The medina: Wooo chile. I do not recommend spending more than 1-2 days in the medina of Marrakech. And if you go, prepared to be haggled/hustled for your LIFE and say no in 5 different languages. Folks will hustle you for directions, food...everything! One man pretended to work at my hotel so I would trust him to give me directions on the medina...only to ask me for money for his “help” 😏 Yea, I would spend max one day in any of the medinas because they are exhausting and sometimes a little scary.
⁣
Conclusion: Morocco is magic and you should book your tickets ASAP sis!⁣
