This week I’m SO excited to share a site I’ve been a fangirl of for nearly a year: ModLi. If you frequent my blog, you’ve likely already heard of ModLi because I’ve featured them in about 20 different posts, including my post about finding modest workout clothes. But this time, I get to review one of the lovely dresses from ModLi thanks to the sweet ladies at ModLi. Read on for the deets!

Downtown Demure x Modli - Red and Black Checkered Dress Review (3)

About the Company

Modli is an online modest fashion marketplace that sells just about every kind of modest clothing your heart could desire, from dresses and skirts to workout clothes and swimsuits. The founder, Nava Brief-Fried, is a regular #girlboss and major inspiration. But why take my word for it when you can read about her on Fox News?

Fit

One thing that worried me about this dress is the lack of shape due to the straight cut. I mean, it’s basically a rectangle, albeit a stylish one. One day my future husband may tell me this dress isn’t flattering at all for my hourglass shape. But I won’t care because I LOVE how this dress feels on me.  It feels a little like…freedom. Soft, checkered freedom. I don’t have to worry about flabby arms, my belly, or even my modesty standards. I can simply throw it on and go. I need more dresses like this in my life.

Thankfully the hem hits right at knee level, so it doesn’t look like a sack on my 5’3 frame. For my fellow shorties interested in this dress, I do advise you wear pointed heels with this dress to elongate your legs.

Quality

The dress is made of textured viscose, so it’s very lightweight and breathable. True story: It was 90-something degrees when I shot this dress, and I still felt comfortable in it. Some concerns: This dress isn’t lined, but the fabric is thick enough to not show your undergarments. I also noticed slight imperfections in the stitching at the hem — the lines weren’t completely straight. Other than those two issues, I’m happy with the construction of this dress.

Price

It’s now on sale for $33.99 (excluding shipping). I’m just going to leave that price there and let you dwell on its awesomeness.

How & Where to Wear It

While the color combination of red and black is best suited for fall/winter months, the classic print makes it wearable year round. As you can tell from how I styled it, I plan to wear this to dress to work with little to no accessories aside from a statement shoe (it’s not necessary to over accessorize because the print is interesting enough on its own). However, you can also wear this beauty to church, dinner to meet the parents, etc. It’s a versatile piece!

Needless to say, I love this dress and recommend to any of my daring friends who like a nice print and unconventional shape. For the price, I consider this checkered beauty a steal!

So gorgeous!! I want this whole outfit. I’m a shortie as well, it’s always a pleasant surprise when styles that we usually are told to stay away from turn out to be flattering.

Exactly! Goes to show fashion “rules” are more like guidelines that can be broken from time to time. Thanks for the love, Keley!
