Simple Steps To Service: 3 Easy Ways to Help Others and Give Back to Your Community

Ethical Fashion from Fashion & Compassion - DowntownDemure.com

The other day I was reminded of how easy it is to get so absorbed in our personal lives that we forget the struggles and needs of others. I recently received a ton of new responsibilities at work, and I’ve been consumed with mastering those tasks (at the expense of my sanity at times). After a particularly stressful work day, I trekked to a local Dollar Store to pick up items for a work event, and the line took an unusually long time to die down. I mumbled several times under my breath about incompetent both the cashier and the other patrons must be. Once I reached the register, I found the kindest elderly lady who was doing her best to ring up patrons while ignoring her own fatigue (and she was clearly tired). When I reached the register, I was reminded to think about HER needs: like a bottle of water and a snack.  Though I was ashamed of my immediate judgment, I was grateful for that moment of humility.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who needs constant reminders to think less about myself and more about others. That’s why I’m so excited to partner with Jeweler’s Mutual Insurance, the premier jewelry insurance company, to encourage all of us to BAND TOGETHER to give back to our local communities and those we may never meet. Read on for 3 easy ways you can begin serving others TODAY (not tomorrow, fellow procrastinators).

  1. Support online campaigns by actually voting. Did you know there are tons of online fundraisers that merely require a vote to make a MAJOR impact on meaningful organizations? Jewelers Mutual is hosting one of those fundraisers, and they are set to donate $2 million to three important causes: health (supporting St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital), home (supporting Habitat for Humanity), and hunger (supporting Feed America or Food Banks Canada).

You can be part of a record-breaking donation to one of those critical non-profits by simply voting for your favorite non-profit HERE. The cause that receives the most votes by  July 31st will receive a $1,000,000.00 donations from Jewelers Mutual. And the lucky runner-up will receive $700,000 while the third-place winner receives $300,000. Oh,  and voters will receive a chance to win a set of 3 stacking bands from STACKED New York weekly.  All in all, everyone wins!

  1. Shop through charitable fashion companies. This is one of my favorite ways to give back doing something I love to do anyway: shop. A simple search of charitable, fair-trade companies on Google will yield several results. Better yet, they offer stylish and trendy goods that compete will the best products in the traditional retail pace – but for a purpose.
  1. Show the people in your life that you care. As I grow older, I learn that the most meaningful acts of service don’t require large amounts of money, time, or fanfare. They merely require recognition. So show the people in your daily lives that you love them by telling them you love them or showing you love them by cooking a meal for them when you know they need one. Even occasional texts make a significant impact.

What I love about any of these the above ideas is that they are actionable and immediate. You don’t need to have a grand plan for service; you just need to care and take daily steps to show that care.

I love this! I have been going through a really hard time myself, and I was reminded the other day that I need to be serving others more, instead of wallowing in self-pity lol There are so many people all around us who need us to be Jesus’ hands and feet to this world! I ma so blessed, and there are so many people going through much worse than me! I’ve been praying for God to help me to view people as He views them 😉 I’m about to go vote now!

Great post! In a world where we the idea of “me me me” is practically shoved down our throats, it is SO important to put others ahead of ourselves. Thanks for the reminder.
